Writer's Memo

The classroom I've designed is a sophomore English class. In my experience, this class focuses on a variety of texts, themes, time periods and authors. I drew from texts that I have worked with in and around my tenth grade English class. Ideally, the class will be in a similar school district to mine- suburban area. There are some technological lessons I'd like to incorporate as well as films. More than anything, I really strove to make this class very inclusive and diverse. Based on some of the texts I did (Looking for Alaska, Night and Shakespeare), I also tried to think of canonical texts as well as some contemporary voices. Many of the texts I chose I have worked with at some point.

As far as my organization, I tried to spread topics out. I didn't want to do anything too similar next to each other. I understand that students won't always like texts, so I wanted the speed to be up and bounce around quite a bit. I collected lesson plans from the internet and tried to find resources while thinking of final projects that I had done in the past, either as a student or working in a classroom. As far as lesson plans went, I wanted fun activities that were geared specifically for the main text. To accompany the larger texts, I tried to think of films, poems and short stories I could incorporate and then use some of the reading strategies we've discussed in class. That's how I decided to separate out my resources, too.
